Letting go...
So that we can let God move in us and through us this week. Part of being on a mission trip is going with the flow and enjoying each moment no matter what’s going on. Today was an abnormal day, but one that was also much needed. As a group we got to spend a lot of time talking about our devotionals and what each other is going through. We learned the history of the church we are here to serve and help. We got to know about the community and how the church has stepped in to help them flourish. We played with the kids in the children homes next door to us. We also got to meet Martha, the woman we are building a home for.
Things I learned today just about the home process. GCLA assists their community in MANY other ways as well!
GCLA’s founding pastor was once a doctor who treated people with HIV & AIDS. His main focus is still helping that group of people and/or children who have lost their parents.
The homes GCLA provides are affordable to those who have no access to credits, who have bad health, or zero money. Many are single women raising families.
Homes start at $20/month and increase to $30 and then to $40 over a 10 year period. After the 10 years they now own the home, but they can not rent, exchange, or sell home. It gives them a sense of ownership, pride, and they value the home more. GCLA is trying to break the patterns of a poverty mindset.
For these families, having a home is a luxury. It can take them a living to buy the materials just to stay dry. It is a dream for them to have this.
